One conflict in the Hobbit is when the dwarves have to go claim their ancestor's treasure but can't because the Smaug is guarding the jewels and treasure. Tolkien makes this story move forward because if this part weren't in the book this entire adventure wouldn't be mentioned and the reader would lose his/her interest very fast. This conflict makes the reader say, "Wow this is one book I don't want to put down!". This conflict paints a picture and tells the reader what the point of this story is and lays out the plot, introductory, and a rising action. Until the point where it hits the climax. That is what makes the reader so interested in this book.
The pgs. are between 17-19 when the dwarves start to sing their song about the adventure they are going to take.
What is the name of this part of a story? It is not part of the c

Eagles Saving Bilbo and the Dwarves
Hobbit Question 2 March 4, 2011 In your own words, describe what happens next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest.
What happens to Bilbo and the dwarves is they were walking through the forest when randomly they hear a pack of wolves in the distance. Their only choice was to climb up a bunch of pine trees. When Bilbo can't get up the tree Dori helps Bilbo up the tree. Once the wolves found the dwarves and Bilbo they stay under the tree so they couldn't come down. They had to climb up the tree because the wolves couldn't climb. Bilbo and the dwarves new that the goblins were going to come after them. When they got theirTHERE they put a ring of fire under the trees so that Bilbo and the dwarves were trapped and couldn't come. That's what happened to the dwarves and Bilbo. There were more details that really made this exciting. You don't even mention the eagles coming to save them. They would all be dead! ~Mrs. Best

When Bilbo got over the fear and hatred of adventures it made me realize that I too have overcome fears in my own life time as well as Bilbo. My adventure started during summer vacation with my family at the doctor's office for our regular check up. The doctor's were a bit concerned that I wasn't gaining any significant weight at the time and that I was a lot smaller and lighter than my sister Allie. So the I was a bit nervous and bummed out that something wasn't right in my body. The doctor's suggested a blood test (One of the worst things that I hate) to see if anything was out of order. In about a week our results came in and it wasn't good news. Their was a blood count that everyone has and the regular number was between fifteen and twenty-five, mine was in the mid two-hundreds! The doctors suggested we see Children's Hospital. With further a due we quickly drove over to the hospital and went to check-in. Once they called my name my stomach felt like it dropped to the floor. My mom followed the nurse and I just followed along. They told me from the results that I may have Celiac's Disease. A disease the means I am allergic to Gluten. At the time I had no idea what "Gluten" was so I thought none of it. Once the pediatrician came in he told us that an Endoscopy was to be held in about two weeks! I felt like I was going to faint because my number one thing on the list of things I hate was getting put to sleep in hospital. After two weeks (that I treasured as my last) the day had come and I did not want to leave my house.
After the drive to the hospital I was escorted to my own "POD" where I had a hospital bed, a T.V., and my parents. When the doctor's came in they told me that I shouldn't worry (A little too late for that because I was shaking in fear). They then said I would be put on an anastetic that would calm me down. The next step they had was after the medicine I took I would be wheeled into the surgery room. The doctors were talking to me in the room and then they put a gas mask over my mouth and nose while they were telling really random jokes, and before you could count to five I was out cold. Then all of a sudden I randomly woke up and my tooth fell out in my mouth (It was funny at the time). I also awoke to a nice orange pop-sickle and my mom and dad telling me what a good job I did. I conquered my fear just as Bilbo over came his fear of adventures. But unfortunately I had Celiac's Disease and there was nothing I could do about it. So I just lived with it and here I am surrounded by all my classmates and doing just fine. This experience helped me in a positive way because I overcame my fear of surgeries. Bilbo was terrified of adventures as I was of surgeries and he even overcame his fear of adventure even when they confronted Wargs, Goblins, and even Wood Elves. Bilbo even liked his adventure so far and when I was down it actually seemed kind of fun afterward.

If Thorin could have lived, do you think he would have regretted his greed? What do you think Tolkien is trying to teach us about material wealth by Thorin's death? In your response, site textual evidence to support your response. Use page numbers too.
Yes, I do think Thorin would have regretted his decision. Tolkien was trying to tell us that you shouldn't be the kind of person that only wants more for himself than others. Instead we should all share and split things equally or their might be a consequence (but not death like Thorin). Tolkien puts forth a huge message that we should not judge others or our self for our material related things, but instead we should look on the inside of other people and then we would realize that they are truly better than the person being selfish and greedy. Some evidence of the result of Thorin's death is in chapter 19, pg. 312 when Thorin is saying "Farewell, good thief I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed." So, yes Tolkien sends an extremely strong message to all of us now and in the future of our lives. ~ The text you cite does not really support your opinion that Thorin changed. It just says he is saying good bye. What from the book would better support your statement? What does he say about all his precious jewels? ~Mrs. Best
